YouTube Shorts are coming on TV: How to watch and more – Times of India

YouTube Shorts are coming to TVs with a vertical, mobile-first format player that is optimised for the big screen. Viewers will be able to watch short videos (60 seconds or less) on their smart TV models that are launched 2019 and later as well as on newer game consoles.
YouTube Shorts on TVs
YouTube Shorts have a vertical video format and TVs are watched in landscape mode. Hence, there is a lot of blank space on either side of Shorts when watched on a TV. Google is tackling this drawback by using the blank space well. There is a redesigned UI with Shorts for playing on a big screen. The short will play in the centre with a white border.
The background or the sides have themed colours based on the clip’s main colour. On the right side of a Short, information such as the title, creator and what sound is being used in the video clip will be displayed.
“In the design rolling out today, we simplified the design of the right side rail, but will be looking to bring in additional functionality in future releases. We believe that this experience balances the fun, quirkiness of Shorts in a way that feels natural for TV,” Brynn Evans and Melanie Fitzgerald, UX Directors at YouTube said in the blog post.
In order to navigate through YouTube Shorts, users will have to use their remotes’ buttons. YouTube says that their “research indicated that people want to take charge of the viewing experience.”
YouTube notes that before reaching the final design, they tested various UI including a “Jukebox” design where multiple Shorts would fill the screen. The main Short will play in the centre and the previous and next Shorts are on the left and right side of the main short, respectively.

How to watch YouTube Shorts on TV
There are multiple ways you can watch Shorts on a big screen, you need a smart TV, a gaming console or a streaming device. As mentioned, the feature may not work on some devices launched before 2019.

  • Users will see recommended Shorts for them and they can watch the one they like or are interested in.
  • Users can also search Shorts from the creators channel.
  • Search and view the creator you like to watch.
  • Click on the creator’s YouTube channel profile.
  • Navigate down to the Shorts shelf to see short videos by the creator.
