Amazon has partnered with Quikjet, a Bengaluru-based cargo jet firm, for this venture. The tech titan will use the Boeing 737-800 plane to offer faster delivery speeds in the country, beginning with Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru.
Amazon prioritises improving consumer experience in India
The arrival of ‘Amazon Air’ promises to significantly improve delivery speeds in the subcontinent, as per Amazon. With around $6.5 billion worth of investments and a swelling user base of 1.1 million, the decision to prioritise India seems quite logical.
Amazon kicked off its own freight service in 2016 with the US market. It eventually arrived in the UK as well, however, only for a brief period of time. India is the third country and second overseas market where the Jeff Bezos-led firm has consolidated its logistics.
Speaking about the freight services rollout in India, Amazon’s Akhil Saxena said, “We continue to invest in speed. We have invested in delivery infrastructure to strengthen the delivery network. Today, we are launching Amazon Air.” Taking note of the firm’s network of ‘fulfilment centres,’ which is spread over 50 locations across the length and breadth of the country, he said “This will help ship goods faster from our fulfilment centres to last-mile deliveries.”
Recently, Amazon has made certain notable movements in the Indian market. Back in late 2022, it opened up its transportation and logistics services to third-party merchants, enabling the firm’s shipping arm to deliver various non-Amazon products. As a consequence, it became a competitor to delivery giants such as Blue Dart. The latest decision to launch ‘Amazon Air’ is yet another India-focused decision that looks to strengthen the tech giant’s foundations in the country.
