Apple planning more for iPhone’s satellite capabilities: How it will go beyond SOS – Times of India

Though only available in the US, Canada, the UK, and a few other countries in Europe currently, satellite connectivity powers the “Emergency SOS” feature of the latest batch of iPhones. But Apple plans to add more to the iPhone’s satellite capabilities, suggesting a recent patent.
The satellite connectivity on iPhone 14 can now only be used to send text messages, share location with emergency responders, and through the Find My app. However, this could change soon as Apple plans to use satellite connectivity for voice, internet, and even videos.

Patently Apple recently spotted a new patent in the US, titled “Communication Terminal,” granted to Apple, that incorporates transceivers on a communication terminal orbiting satellites to power voice and internet services. The patent lists some Apple engineers as inventors, including Matt Ettus, who worked on iPhone 14’s Emergency SOS via satellite.
“Satellite communications data conveyed by transceivers #28 and antenna radiators #30 may include media data (e.g., streaming video, television data, satellite radio data, etc.), voice data (e.g., telephone voice data), internet data, and/or any other desired data.” reads the patent.
While the patent does not mean that the next iPhone will have all this functionality, it is now known that Apple has some big plans for satellite communication on iPhone and that it may not stay limited to Emergency SOS.
So soon, you may be able to browse the internet, tweet, watch Apple TV, or maybe call for help when in need. Else, you can also drop a simple SOS text with latitude and longitude to first responders as it is done now.
