Facebook Gaming app retires later this year
Facebook announced that it is shutting down its game streaming app on iOS and Android this year. As per a notice sent to users, Facebook said that the app will be no longer available to download, effective October 28, a little more than two years after its introduction.
In 2018, Facebook first introduced Gaming, Fb.gg, to compete with the growing dominance of Twitch and YouTube. The Gaming platform was birthed to lure the creators and audience, mainly focusing on gameplay livestream and videos.
Two years later, in 2020, the social media giant decided to bring the service to smartphones with iOS and Android apps to garner more users. In the same year, the company acquired Microsoft’s Mixer, bringing in some big names in the industry like Shroud and Ninja.
Some other big names also switched from Twitch to Facebook since the contracts were lucrative. But, once the contracts ended, these streamers returned to Twitch, taking their audience with them, leaving Facebook Gaming stranded.
Facebook did not say what led to the shutting of the Gaming app, but this could very well be the reason why the social media platform is retiring Gaming on mobile. Also, Facebook has a tough time retaining users, so this could be a way to cut some losses.
Even though mobile apps will soon be a thing of the past, Facebook Gaming will live on the web.
“We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of you for everything that you’ve done to build a thriving community for gamers and fans since the app first launched,” said Facebook in the notice sent to users.
