Amazon has stopped the field trials of Scout, its home delivery robot, as per a report by Bloomberg. The tech giant is reportedly disbanding the 400-strong global team working on the project as part of its company-wide cost-cutting measures.
However, in a statement given to The Verge, the e-commerce giant said that the Scout program is not cancelled yet and has just been scaled back for the time being.
“There were aspects of the program that weren’t meeting customers’ needs. During our Scout limited field test, we worked to create a unique delivery experience but learned through feedback that there were aspects of the program that weren’t meeting customers’ needs. As a result, we are ending our field tests and reorienting the program. We are working with employees during this transition, matching them to open roles that best fit their experience and skills.”, Alisa Carroll, an Amazon spokesperson, said in a statement to The Verge.

As per the report, Scout has been trailed in a number of US states after launching in 2019. It is a fully-electric home delivery robot that’s the size of a small cooler, as per the company. It has six wheels, three on each side, and is designed to “roll along sidewalks at a walking pace.” Amazon says that it developed the delivery robot at its R&D lab in Seattle, with an aim to create a device that can “safely and efficiently navigate around pets, pedestrians and anything else in their path.”
Amazon began testing the Scout devices by delivering packages to customers in a neighbourhood in Snohomish County, Washington. In the beginning phase of the tests, the devices were designed to autonomously follow their delivery route with an Amazon employee accompanying them.
